Who knew? That little expiration date on the saltine cracker box really does mean something! I opened prepared my delicious cream of tomato soup and reached for the saltines (which, in my defense, I rarely eat). I took one out, expecting the really predictable, salty crunch. Instead, I tasted almost-rancid cardboard. It was all very disturbing.
Turning the box around and upside down, I saw this date: April 2008. Ew! I tend to be a little on the suggestive side [read: hypochondriac] and immediately began wondering what ptomaine poisoning is and if it can be contracted by eating old, icky saltine crackers.
If only I had actually done Rachel’s Little Things post (www.homesanctuary.typepad.com) about cleaning out the pantry (actually, her post was about removing trash from anywhere, but she talked about her own pantry and fridge)…
The moral of my story is: Read Rachel Anne Ridge’s Small Thing and then just do it!
Happy Friday. Happy Snow Day #2 for some. Happy home. May your coffee be hot and your crackers be fresh!
Excuse me while I go get something to get this cardboard taste out of my mouth. I’m thinking dark chocolate…

yep…I found all kinds of expired things in our pantry…good moral to the story…good luck getting rid of that aftertaste!
Just popping over as a company girl! Ummm… if it’s got a 2008 date on it, you’re doing better than some of the things I found in MY fridge and pantry when I cleaned them out…. oh yes, there were definitely things from 2006 and 07. Yikes! And I think that dark chocolate might be the cure for everything, so enjoy!
I have had that happen. I usually keep things pretty much cleaned out but there are somethings that are so yucky. I worked on the frig thing myself but did it on the day she suggested doing half of something!
Actually it is a pretty good idea to clean out every 6 months or so. I do that because I work with a food pantry and I figure if I have something I haven’t used then I should give it away before it goes out of date.
I hope your lunch today is better.
I enjoyed coming by.
Have a Blessed Weekend,
Sherry
Yikes, what a not-fun surprise! I hope you didn’t get sick after all
The SOUP sounds wonderful, at least! When I’m feeling decadent, I’ll sometimes put goldfish crackers (if there are any in the cabinets) in my tomato soup. Reminds me of being a kid.
You just reminded me … I have two unopened boxes of saltines in my cold cellar. That have been there for perhaps three years? Ew!
Go for the chocolate – I’m having hot chocolate today (soon!) and so are some others from Company Girl Coffee.
Cheers,
Rooh
Thanks, Rooh! You really can’t go wrong with chocolate, can you?
Thanks, Ashley. I did not get sick (whew!) I only ate 1/4 of one before I realized how awful it was. Tomato soup and grilled cheese takes me back…I don’t remember Goldfish crackers when I was a kid. [sigh] Hope that doesn’t mean I’m old!
Thanks, Sherry! You make a good point with food pantry donations. I know that some folks clean out their pantries, donating the old. But it is a good thing to think, “If I would not serve it to my own family, it should not be donated!” Glad you stopped by.
I must confess to some older exp. dates! Ew. I do need to follow Rachel’s plan…Thanks for stopping by, Beth!
Tomatoe soup with Ritz crackers was my favourite as a kid. Goldfish crackers are similar in soup, but not the same as a brocken up bunch of Ritz crackers
When my mom served Zoodles to a friend of mine and myself (this is when I was around eight years old) we’d put the Zoodles on the Ritz or Premium Plus crackers and eat it like that!
That’s an unpleasant surprise. Chocolate is a good cure for most things though!
Cleaning out my cupboard has been on my to do list for quite some time …haven’t got to it yet, but I’m sure I’ll find things just as much out of date! Oh, and Cream of Tomato is my favourite!
haha, lesson learned, I suppose!
Dark chocolate…great choice! Sorry about your crackers though. That’s a real bummer when you think you have all the bases covered for dinner.
Love the new layout, Jamie!!!
Amen! Luckily, it was just for me…
