Dish Addict

I have a problem. If I’m being honest, I have to blame my grandmother Pearl. Even as a very small child, I was aware of her Fiesta and my unnatural desire to have the rose plate while visiting.

Then, when my husband and I got married, his boss gave us this:

Blue Bow by Royal Worcester

I just loved it! Still do.

These dishes (Pfaltzgraff–Heritage) were given to us for a wedding gift from friends at the school where I taught in Indiana. Eight full place settings plus canisters and serving pieces! I continue to use them and think fondly of the folks who helped us start married life with a classic everyday china, instead of what we both were using.

Several years later, I fell victim to Gerald Henn. I do not have many of these. (They were a bit pricey, and I began to feel guilty choosing between food for my children and a new plate. :) ) Recently, I have discovered these on eBay, however, and might just add some blue spongeware mugs and plates to my set.

FYI:  This is the very best coffee mug around!

[Gulp.] I just realized that this combines my two biggest vices and only two addictions…I suppose it could be worse.

And now, I know:  I have a problem, but I just can’t seem to stop. Twelve place settings later…

The Fiesta ware is really beautiful–so cheerful, especially during these grey days outside. We’re needing some more mugs, but ours will probably have to come from the dollar store. Actually, on my last visit I spotted an inviting striped pattern that I hope they still have in stock.

Hope you have a great weekend that includes a Happy Valentine’s Day!

  2. Debbie says:

Ohhhhh – how lovely. I just love beautiful dishes. Fiesta is The Bomb. But I think I love the spongeware even more… So vintage and reminds me of Little House on the Prairie. =) Thanks for sharing your cupboards…

  3. Anna says:

So funny… I wish I lived near you. I’d help you feel convicted about giving up some of your dishes to the needy (me!) Just kidding. We have one place setting- Corel ware too. Which is perfect right now with little kids, especially since they’re just learning to wash their own dishes.

    Enjoy your beautiful collection!

  4. Marie says:

Lovely dishes…..I must admit a weakness for them too…I just bought some valentine dishes already on the mark down table today…too cute to pass up! Have a good weekend.

  5. Terri says:

LOL. I have the same “problem”. I could easily have a walk in closet with shelves just full of dishes. I love my plum Fiestaware. I have my grandmother’s china, Christmas pottery, and several miscellaneous sets and partial sets. Thanks for sharing all your beautiful dishes with us.

  6. Kimberly says:

My Granny got be hooked on dishes when I was a little girl too. I have worked on down-sizing my collection over the last several years because they weren’t getting used. I really enjoyed getting to look at your dishes. Great post.

  7. cari says:

I can relate…I have a paper/cloth fetish…At least you get regular use from yours! Have a great weekend!

  8. jamie says:

Cari–Sadly I, too, like fabric–though not to the extent of dishes!
    Thanks for stopping by!

  9. jamie says:

Kimberly–I have let some dishes go, as well, over the years…But I think I have to hang on to my favorites–at least, for now! Thanks for reading!

  10. jamie says:

Ooohhh, Terri. I don’t have the plum, but I have seen it and think it is beautiful! Also, having china that is from a family member is very special. I do not have any of my grandmother’s original Fiesta ware, but using my “new” version does make me think of her!

  11. jamie says:

Valentine dishes sound fun! Especially since they were a good deal. Enjoy, Marie!

  12. jamie says:

Anna, you are wise to use Corelle for the present. Even wiser to start now teaching your children to clean up after themselves! There will be plenty of time later to add the more breakable stuff…if you like. Happy Valentine’s Day!

  13. jamie says:

Thanks, Debbie…I love that little touch of vintage, too. Thanks for stopping by!

  14. jamie says:

Julia, one of my favorite things is color! (Could you tell?) And I have a rule about the Fiesta ware: Nothing should match–dinner plates, salad bowls, mugs. It makes for a very colorful table! If you really like the Fiesta, keep your eye open at flea markets and thrift shops. You never know what you can find for a great price…Happy Valentine’s Day right back at you!

  15. SusanC says:

We have Fiestaware, too, in red and yellow — such a cheerful combination!

  16. Ashley says:

I love Fiesta, especially the bowls and pitchers. Your collection is so cheery and fun! Smiles every time you open the cabinet :)

  17. jamie says:

Ashley, I love how you said that! I do smile when I open that cabinet…It actually even makes unloading the dishwasher better, too!

  18. Samantha says:

I love your dishes:) I also love the sponge pattern.

  19. Mama Bear says:

I have a set of the Heritage. I like some of the Fiesta, red mostly. And I am attracted to most any Blue & White dishes. I have the Yorktowne.
I found some Blue & White salad plates at TJMAXX on Friday but talked myself out of buying them. Now I regret that.

  20. Oh, me too! My fiesta ware thing actually came from my husband- his whole family are addicted, and now me too. Such bright colors, such fun! I also just need a few more… (Ridiculous, cause we could probably eat for a week without washing dishes!)

But it doesn’t stop there! The old china with pink roses and the tea pot from my great great grandma! The new old set of brown transferware that was just given to me by a friend- oh, I just love every color of transferware, how much space can I find for more bits and pieces?

It is an addiction, and there’s not much I can do about it. Well, there’s not much I want to do about it…

  21. jamie says:

    Hi, Laura,
Thanks for your comments! I also have a sister and brother/sister-in-law who share the Fiesta obsession. Must be genetic! And I agree that this is an addiction I can live with…

  22. jamie says:

Thanks for stopping by, Mama Bear…I guess that dish money of yours is just waiting for something better!

  23. Joyce says:

Love those colors. We’re pretty boring with our white dishes. At least they go with everything. =p We’ll have to venture out of the box one of these days.

  24. jamie says:

Hi, Joyce. Thanks for stopping by! I definitely think you cannot go wrong with white dishes. Some food just looks more appetizing that way. You can always jazz up the table with colorful napkins, placemats, chargers, or, of course, sippy cups! :)

  25. pendy says:

Also guilty…and yes, apparently it’s hereditary. My daughter has started with Fiesta. I don’t have any but a friend does and my daughter has always admired it. I’m bad about buying a random bowl, plate, platter…not a set.
